Description
of Training

Yuut
has held a wide array of classes, touching a multitude
of career fields for both youth and adults.
Youth
Youth involved in Yuut’s programs have so far benefited
from tech-prep/dual credit courses and construction academies.
Working with the University of Alaska- Kuskokwim Campus
(KuC), Yuut has coordinated two dual-credit medical terminology
classes. Giving high school students the chance to earn
high school and college credit. Additionally, Yuut has
sponsored numerous Youth Academies, introducing students
to construction careers. Yuut has also established a school-to-apprenticeship
program through the Bethel Alternative Boarding School
(BABS). This program helps students step into apprenticeship
with credit for experience following graduation from high
school.
Eventually the entire Bethel Alternative Boarding School
will relocate to the Yuut Campus. BABS is a model dropout
recovery program. Students commit to sobriety and academics
in a family-style environment where one half of the day
is dedicated to intensive academics and the other is for
real-world hands-on work experience.
Adults
There are two well-developed programs available for adults.
Yuut has the only federally registered, specific trades
apprenticeship in the YK Delta Region – the Yukon-Kuskokwim
Delta Apprenticeship Program. Apprentices may specialize
in carpentry, electrical, or plumbing. After completing
8,000 on-the-job training hours and hundreds of hours
of related classroom training, apprentices are prepared
to take the state licensure exam. Apprentices become “Journeymen” in
their trade after successful completion of the licensure
exam and may work as a plumber, electrician, or carpenter.
There are currently 27 registered apprentices working
towards Journeyman status with Yuut, and this number
is expected to increase within the next couple of years.
To
date, Yuut’s Caliyulriit (“People Who Want
to Work”) Healthcare Training Program has watched
four cohorts of Personal Care Assistants (PCAs) graduate
and step into the local workforce. Yuut is proactively
working with partners, YKHC and UAF, to develop Certified
Medical Assistant (CMA) and Healthcare Reimbursement courses.
Further expansion of programs includes offering training
for careers in mining, technology, construction, driving
and heavy equipment, and certifications in natural sciences.
