Construction Classes

Yuut Elitnaurviat offers Construction Trades Academy trainings throughout the year. Each section will serve between 12 and 20 participants. These training opportunities provide both hands on and classroom experience in the field of Construction and Maintenance. Most classes will utilize NCCER Curriculum and be taught by an NCCER Certified Instructor.
Our training has been designed to ensure the success of individuals who want to pursue a career in the Construction Trades field. Participants can earn our Certificate in Construction and Maintenance. The certificate program is offered in conjunction with our local college campus and is accredited through the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Students who opt to further pursue education beyond the certificate will have 24.5 credits that can be applied to an Associates or a Bachelors degree, in addition to 32.5 credits that can be applied to UAF’s Certificate program.
Apprentices who take Construction Classes can gain Related Training Instruction hours toward Yuut’s YK Delta Apprenticeship Program.
CTT 100: NCCER Construction Core Technology – This course introduces basic construction techniques using OSHA approved standards by stressing how to follow safe work practices and procedures, how to safely use hand and power tools, and how to extract information from construction drawings. This course is divided into seven (7) modules. Each module must be successfully passed. Generally, each module will have two (2) components. All will have a written portion including a final exam. Most modules will require hands-on demonstration of achieved competencies related to the module.

CTT 106: Construction Mathematics – This course introduces basic mathematical procedures commonly used in the construction and maintenance crafts, such as, multiplication, subtraction, addition, division, working with fractions, and measuring areas, volume, and capacity of shapes.
Prerequisites: H.S. Diploma or GED
Co-requisite: CTT 100
Course Fee: Waived if taking CTT 100
Course Length: 45 hrs
CTT 193: Boilers, Burners and Residential Oil Heaters – Comprehensive instruction for persons employed in the installation and maintenance of oil fired heating systems. Students will learn installation and maintenance applications of fuel transfer, theories of combustion, nozzles, combustion chambers, heat exchanges, draft regulators, stacks, controls, and sizing of systems.

CTT 135: Boiler Troubleshooting and Boiler Repair – Focuses on the basic components of boilers and burners used in industry for heating residential and commercial properties. Class includes the teaching of concepts and strategies related to the process and safety operations of combustion, boiler thermodynamics, control systems, fuel pumps, ignition systems, draft and venting principles and boiler operation according to Alaska code. This course will include both theoretical learning and hands-on assignments. Upon completion of the training, the student may choose to sit for the State of Alaska Boiler Class 4 License Exam.

CTT 170: NCCER Residential Electrical Level 1 – This course introduces the basics of Residential Electrical and Electrical Theory. Students will be instructed in the following areas: Electrical Safety and Tools, Electrical Circuits and theory, Introduction to the NEC, Device boxes and Hand Bending, Residential Electrical Services and Electrical Test Equipment. This course is divided into twelve (12) modules. Each module must be successfully passed. Generally, each module will have two (2) components. All will have a written portion including a final exam. Most modules will require hands-on demonstration of achieved competencies related to the module.

CTT 110: NCCER Residential Carpentry Level 1 – The course introduces basic materials and framing techniques used in the construction trades. They will cover an orientation, introduction to materials, and advanced tools used in the trades. Also the student will be introduced to the techniques used in framing a structure. The student will be introduced to exterior doors and windows commonly installed on construction projects and their proper installation. This course is divided into eleven (11) modules. Each module must be successfully passed. Generally, each module will have two (2) components. All will have a written portion including a final exam. Most modules will require hands-on demonstration of achieved competencies related to the module.

CTT 115: NCCER Residential Carpentry Level 2 – Covers weatherproofing of the building envelope and interior/exterior finishing. This is a very hands-on intensive course for those wishing to gain higher level knowledge and experience in the area of residential carpentry. This course is divided into seven (7) modules. Each module must be successfully passed. Generally, each module will have two (2) components. All will have a written portion including a final exam. Most modules will require hands-on demonstration of achieved competencies related to the module.

CTT 150: NCCER Residential Plumbing Level 1 – This course introduces the basics of the plumbing trade. Students will be instructed in the following areas: Plumbing Tools and Math, Plumbing Drawings and Safety, Plumbing Piping Systems, Plumbing Fitting/Fixtures/Faucets and Introduction to DWV and Water Supply Systems. This course is divided into thirteen (13) modules. Each module must be successfully passed. Generally, each module will have two (2) components. All will have a written portion including a final exam. Most modules will require hands-on demonstration of achieved competencies related to the module.
